I learned American mahjongg with a group of friends when my kids were in preschool and was quickly smitten. (Thank you, Mahj Club Sara Linden!)
After about ten years of playing, I've decided to share my love of the game and teach others. For me, mahjongg is about connecting with friends and keeping a fun tradition alive. Keeping my mind nimble is a nice perk too.
When mahjongg isn't front of mind, you can find me with my two kids or trying to savor the rare quiet moment at home. I'm a Wordler and yogi, coffee drinker and still like connecting by phone with friends. I still have east coast energy from my NJ/NYC roots and love the calmer pace of my life in northern California.
I’d love to share the mahjongg basics or help you plan a mahjongg event. I hope you will find it as much fun as I do.
With Mahj on my Mind,
Kim
Mahjongg is a tile game that originated in China in the mid-1800s and came to the US in the 1920s. There are several theories on the name, one of which is that it came from the sound of shuffling tiles which is similar to the sound of a sparrow and sounds like the Mandarin word for sparrow.
The goal is to be the first to get a winning 14-tile sequence or "Mahjongg". The National Majongg League (NMLJ) formed in 1937 to standardize the rules for American mahjongg. The NMLJ publishes an annual card of winning hands, with players anxiously awaiting its release each spring.
Sounds simple? Sort of, and yet complicated enough to keep you wanting to play again and again. Let me help demystify this game and it's quirky lingo - Bam, Crack, Dot... Dragons and Flowers.
